Sport was important and as a very weedy short-sighted child, I dreaded rugby especially lying in the wet and cols mud, holding a ball upright by my finger tips to allow a great oaf to kick it. He sustained and promoted a structure inside which Jonathan Fletcher and John Smyth operated their horrendous regimes. Meanwhile Pete Wards Growing Up Evangelical is a good place to begin.

That he could believe wholeheartedly what he said, while still behaving in the way that it appears he did is, as in Smyths case, a sign of compartmentalization a compartmentalization that can only be sustained by systematic insistence that self-examination is effeminate and dangerous. Thank God those days are behind us.

Soccer, cricket and rowing (but also individualistic sports like fives) were evidently treated seriously, but not at the expense of other attainments.
I can support Edwards account from my own experience of being a senior camper at Iwerne. If I may make an extreme comparison, the Nazi War criminal Josef Mengele retuned from Latin America for his fathers funeral in Germany and friends and neighbours did not turn him in m even though the horror of his crimes were known. And third, there are those who left the ghetto, looked back at it in disgust, with regret at the wasted years, with bemusement and remorse because they were taken in, and with a huge sense of relief that they escaped. If Nash and his collaborators knew anything, it was that systems of class power and belief are undone as surely from inside as by any external force, and there were too many signs of that happening.
