The Greenwood massacre happened only two years after the Red Summer of 1919, a time when Black communities all over the nation were terrorized by white people. In doing research, we had come across hundreds of other fully or predominantly Black-owned, Black Indigenous Amy Gastelum: I want to jump in here to give a little more context. Its a commodity. J.W. And it also tells the story of a terrible massacre there in 1921. And they have not examined that as a collective when Black people have their own agency, when Black people have their own sense of being. KalaLea: And warfare and, and such like that, you know. We painstakingly built it by hand, in no small part to Jessica Sheltons work over the last four years, just spending evenings and weekends adding to a map using census records, combining those with county land records. But the centennial anniversary of the attack brought journalists and filmmakers and even President Biden to Tulsa. One of the most moving sequences in the film is a shot of Hampton leading a multi-racial mass meeting in Chicago, bringing them to their feet, fists in the air, chanting I am a revolutionary!. And Greenwood, I think obviously because of the tragic events and its destruction in 1921, I think obviously stands out. Lady Panther: Kathleen Cleaver, in Oakland in 1968. You know, there were certain moments where even for myself, I thought people should know, like people should know this story.
Resmaa Menakem: Think about this. He built up a cult of personality, calling himself the Supreme Servant of the People. In 1972, Newton shut down the every chapter outside of Oakland, and put the Partys reputation on the line in an attempt to get Seale elected Mayor of Oakland. Amy Gastelum: Mm-hmm. Without the kind of authoritative contexta museum or historical institution might provide, this presentation fails to engage with internal rifts and conflicts, a much-needed perspective on gender politics, or the Partys eventual demise.
