We did a one-night backpacking trip thinking we'd camp at Kennedy Lake for the night, but we couldn't actually get to the lake because it was so muddy/swampy towards the end and didn't see anywhere suitable for camping (we could see the lake though). Luckily the Emigrant Wilderness looked like a relatively smokeless/fireless option, and there was no quota for permits to hike the Gem Lake Loop, so I filled out the permit application online and off we went. Wonderful hike though, will definitely do it again! Sure wished they would set up a parking lot right here which would literally save 3 miles of boring walking along dirt roads but maybe they cant since its wilderness even though theres a huge RV camping area right there?? All told around 9.4 miles. Luckily the Emigrant Wilderness looked like a relatively smokeless/fireless option, and there was no quota for permits to hike the Gem Lake Loop, so I filled out the permit application online and off we went. Excellent easy to follow trail! Lot of consistent up hill at the start but then youre done and get to enjoy relatively flat trail the rest of the way. The overall mileage was quite a bit further than notes on the review, but the elevation is on par. Was too muddy near the lake, so we camped before the lake. Something went wrong. Went clockwise and stayed at Sheep Camp, Upper Buck, and then Relief Valley. Made the best of it even when it didn't go according to plans. Had an awesome trip. Its about building relationships with the outdoors and each other. The main issue is we did this hike during the heat wave where it was HOT out - moreso than normal this time of year. Maps doesn't know they are linked by a parking area so if you pick "Trail Head" it will send you down a very rugged logging road (4N34 can be a oil-pan crushing bad for a sedan). Lake underwhelming. Beautiful and peaceful, only saw a couple other people. You will need warm, lightweight gear, sleeping bag, tent, and a backpack and hiking boots that have been worn and proven to be comfortable. Commonly referred to as Lake Toho, this lake is about 13 feet deep, and offers a diverse habitat that includes a sand and shell Attempted for a few hundred feet but no trail and constant postholing without snowshoes. Did not notice any mosquitos. Be aware that the location AllTrails sends you to for the trailhead is a bit early. Bluto. Participants should keep their personal pack weight to below 25 pounds as the commissary load will equal about 15 pounds per person. MANY dry and granite rich climbs and descents, interspersed with beautiful aspen and willow rich meadows. A great two day, one night trip.

We arrived on a Sunday night of a 3 day weekend (7/3), so there were several camping groups but there was no problem finding a secluded spot. All-in-all a solid backpacking trip. Just north of Yosemite, the Emigrant Wilderness contains thousands of acres of pine forests, grassy meadows, glacier-carved granite ridges, and hundreds of mountain lakes. Biggest bonus is the awesome views of Leavitt Meadow below the Secret Lake trail. .
